A stunt rifle used in the production of the 2010 horror film The Wolfman. Brought back to his family’s estate to investigate the death of his brother, Shakespearean actor Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro) finds himself bitten by a werewolf. Suffering fits and terrible dreams he eventually recovers, but it’s not long before the darkness within him is unleashed.
This custom rifle, cast from a “sporterised” Martini Henry lever action rifle, was one of the weapons belonging to Sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins), Lawrence’s estranged father. The rifle is taken by Lawrence when he follows his father into the crypt one night, before he himself turns into a werewolf.
Made of hard rubber with a metal armature for stability, this weapon is a stunt version that would have been used for fight sequences and when a hero version of the rifle was not necessary for a shot. Intricately detailed, the rifle features the distinctive loading handle beneath the trigger guard, while the sides of the weapon have an intricate array of designs, including scenes showing lions in the wild, and the text “Made for J.S.F. Botha, Cape Town” on the right hand side. The metalwork is finished to appear like blued steel while the wood stock is finished in a deep, dark brown.
The rifle has some very light wear to the sights and a switch on the right side, but besides these minor flaws the weapon remains in a very good production-used condition, measuring 112cm (44“) in length.
