A riding shield used by King Phillip's army in the 2010 Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe movie Robin Hood. This shield was used in the scenes towards the end of the movie when the French King invades England with a small but determined army. The shield is painted a deep green, with three yellow fleur de lis patterns and has been covered in a lacquer which protected the shield and has made it particularly glossy. It is a 'kite' shaped shield made from wood with a flat top, which has been covered in canvas and the front is padded slightly for the actor's protection during action scenes, and has a leather arm strap and carry strap on the back which is held in place by rivets that can be seen from the front as small round. The entire shield has suffered battle damage whilst on set, such as discolouration and flaking but, which adds a definite sense of 'action' of the piece. Measures 79cm x 46cm (31" x 18").
