A model miniature tower used in the production of the Tim Burton comic book adaptation Batman. As the mayor calls for a cut in crime in advance of Gotham City’s 200th anniversary celebrations, all eyes turn on the masked vigilante Batman (Michael Keaton), leading an undercover war against crime in the city. However, when Batman accidentally knocks mobster Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) into chemical waste, he creates a deadly threat to the city - The Joker!
This model was produced to form part of the massive model miniature of Axis Chemicals, the chemical factory that turns Napier into the Joker and that is used to create the laughing gas Smilex. Batman destroys the factory as he tries to foil the Joker’s plans and bring an end to his chaotic schemes in Gotham, with this piece created as a back-up tower for the pyrotechnics sequence as the factory is blown to smithereens. The tower would see further use a decade later, forming part of the nuclear power plant that maligned the cast of 1999’s Guest House Paradiso.
Based on the incredibly elaborate production designs of Anton Furst, who wanted to bring a truly dystopian urban feel to Gotham City, the tower is made of formed styrene with a wood base. The intricately made tower has an array of detailing, including fully detailed walk ways, ladders, chemical piping and engineering platforms. Warning lights for passing aircraft have also been added, with four LEDs still operating when connected to a 12 volt DC power supply (not included). The tower is finished in dark greys and reds with the text “Gotham” applied in white decals near the top of the tower. The entire piece is dirtied down and given a worn, rusted look.
Displaying some wear and with some minor damage to the model’s detailing components at the top and sides, the model remains in otherwise very good condition.
