A research folder and storyboards from the production of 2013 fantasy action film 47 Ronin. This lot comes from the personal collection of Simon Atherton, the weapons master on the film.

The research folder contains 32 pages of A4 paper bound in a plastic ring binder. Titled “47 Ronin Weaponry”, it contains detailed colour images and notes on classical Japanese weaponry dating back to the 12th century. The folder contains sub-sections on archery, swords, daggers, spears and matchlocks.

The printed storyboards feature over 250 hole-punched A4 pages, bound by metal clips, with 3 or 4 storyboards per page. They depict several of the film’s sequences, including Kai’s (Keanu Reeves) fight against the Tengu Lord (Togo Igawa) and his infiltration of Lord Yoshinaka Kira’s (Tadanobu Asano) fortress. The lot also includes printed colour depictions of Kira and Asano scabbards.

The lot exhibits occasional creasing and staining but it remains in very good condition.
