Step back in time to the historic premiere of one of the greatest sequels in cinema history. Designed by the talented Eddie Paul of FEREF and featuring artwork by Ralph McQuarrie, this poster is a rare gem from 20th May 1980 – just a few days before British Empire Day.
Empire Day was a celebration from the era of Queen Victoria, later renamed Commonwealth Day. The 20th Century Fox marketing department took full advantage of the film’s release date as an army of Stormtroopers – in Jeeps and on foot – took to the streets of London, holding placards of this poster to build up the crowd’s already heightened excitement for the much-anticipated sequel.

Crafted by artist Roger Kastel, this 1980 masterpiece is hailed as one of the rarest and most exquisite Star Wars posters. Fondly dubbed the “Gone with the Wind” style for its resemblance to the classic 1939 poster for the film of the same name. This British Advance One-Sheet (the image was also used in the US campaign) was designed by the creative genius Saul Bass for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). It is said that artist Saul Bass drew over 300 ideas for this single poster alone. Those with an attention to detail to rival Kubrick’s will notice a difference in the tagline of this design – ‘A Tale of Modern Horror’ – with the final version referring to the film as a ‘Masterpiece’. This is quite possibly one of a number of concept posters that Kubrick had personally commissioned before he decided the best version to go with. We have never seen another one, and it represents an ultra-rare first-time offering in this auction.
