A gravestone used in the production of James Watkins’ 2012 horror-drama, The Woman In Black. The film follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as he travels to a remote village terrorised by a vengeful ghost. Kipps finds himself in a race against time to discover the mystery of the spectre woman before she takes all the children of Crythin Gifford.
This gravestone would have been used in Crythin Gifford Cemetery to mark Polly Shaw’s grave although not clearly spotted in the final cut of the film. The gravestone consists of a lamb lying on a plinth that is engraved with Polly’s memorial message. The lamb is cast from polystyrene, painted and distressed with moss and mouldings to look aged and weathered. The base is made from wood that has been painted and distressed to match the lamb. The grave suffered significant wear from use and time spent in storage and the lamb’s right ear is missing, in some places there are chips to the paintwork revealing the polystyrene beneath. However, the piece remains in fair used condition measuring approximately 90cm x 50cm x 70cm (35.5” x 19.75” x 27.5”).
