A Ray Harryhausen hand-drawn sketch of a cowboy being snatched by a Pteranodon, from the production of Jim O'Connolly's fantasy Western The Valley of Gwangi. This lot comes from Harryhausen's personal collection.

This artwork is a sketch of a key drawing created during production, depicting the entrance of the cowboys into the forbidden valley, and Lope (Curtis Arden) being lifted off his horse by a Pteranodon. This sequence shows the first battle between humans and prehistoric creatures in the film, and the moment was achieved by lifting Arden into the air via a crane cable, with Harryhausen later animating the Pteranodon to correspond with his movements. The drawing is rendered in pencil on paper. The edges of the paper are torn, but none of the tears disrupt the image. Dimensions: 35.5 cm x 49 cm (14" x 19.25")
