A special effects shield used in the production of the Greek mythological epic Troy. After falling for the beautiful Helen (Diane Kruger), Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) smuggles her aboard his brother Hector’s (Eric Bana) ship to take her to Troy. Seeking revenge, the Greek armies led by Agamemnon (Brian Cox) and the legendary warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) set sail for Troy, where one of history’s greatest wars will be waged.
This shield and others like it were used in the filming of the beach landing scenes as Achilles’ brave warriors, the Myrmidons, storm the beach ahead of the Greek fleet. Made of polyurethane rubber with foam backing and lined in leather, this practical shield is fitted with a range of tubing and equipment to make it capable of launching an arrow from beneath its surface, using high pressure gas, to give the appearance of being struck by a loosed arrow. Such shields were used extensively throughout the scenes as the Myrmidons make their way up the beach.

Well used in the filming on the beaches of Malta, the shield’s surface has been distressed with scuffs and scrapes across its face and single boss to give it the look of a battle-worn piece of equipment. The arrow on this shield lacks some tension as the elastic has slackened since the shield was produced, but the mechanism for launching the arrows remains functional and the arrow still has some of its fletching. As such, the shield remains in a very good production-used condition, and is a fascinating piece highlighting the film’s special effects wizardry, and measures approximately 85cm (33.5”) across.
