A Program Chest Piece and Gauntlet worn in Steven Lisberger's 1982 sci-fi classic, Tron. When computer hacker Kevin Flynn is abducted into the digital world, he is forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program named Tron. A ground breaking film at the time, Tron was the first feature film to use 100% computer animated scenes. Most of the scenes involve human actors in the digital world, and these scenes, while assisted by computers, were often hand-animated using layers upon layers of cells.
Armor of this style can be seen worn by several “programs” in the film as they are gathered for training. The programs wore costumes made from white foam with black detailing which allowed for an electronic glow after the completion of effects. This chest piece has a shape very similar to a baseball catcher’s chest protector and features two white straps (one around the neck which connects with Velcro, and one at the waist which fastens with an attached plastic buckle. Paired with the chest piece is a single gauntlet worn on the Programs arms. This piece is also made from white foam with decorate stickers that feature a digital aesthetic. Also included are a pair of off-white colored cloth gloves.
Due to production use and age, both items exhibit some wear with the stickers pealing away from the costume (see photos). The material is also very fragile due to age and remains in overall fair condition.
