Episode "Safe" (201) introduced an elite Force Recon team of four Martian Marines led by Gunnery Sgt. Roberta "Bobbie" Draper. The Marines in this unit were trained to wear and operate the heavy Goliath Powered Armor suits featured in the series. All four members were first seen during the episode "Safe" (201) in full Goliath suit armor performing a training drill on a Martian crater.
Working closely with the Expanse production team, Legacy Effects custom built Goliath power armor suits and helmets for each of these characters in the Force Recon unit. The complex Goliath suits required up to three crew members to get each actor ready for filming. Pieces of armor were applied directly onto the under-suit layer using hook and loop; armor pieces incorporated both foam rubber and leather for actor flexibility. Bobbie's suit and helmet were crafted with the history of the character in mind, with each dent and scrape representing a piece of Bobbie's backstory.
The attentiveness to detail in the costume's design was in keeping with the care and pride Bobbie showed for her Goliath armor throughout the series. Bobbie repeatedly refused to update or replace her gear, scoffing at Sa'id and cursing out Captain Martens for suggesting replacement in the episodes "Home" (201) and "The Seventh Man" (207). Scenes on the Sirocco during the episodes "Home" (201), "Static" (203) and a scene on the Rocinante during "Redoubt" (604) show the time and resources needed to repair, maintain, and power the complex suits. In the episode "Paradigm Shift" (206), Bobbie's entire unit is attacked by the Caliban hybrid on Ganymede, with a severely injured Bobbie the only survivor. The ease with which the Hybrid tore apart the nearly indestructible Martian armor, causing the deaths of Corporal Sa'id and Privates Hillman and Travis, highlighted the danger inherent in weaponizing the protomolecule.
