A book cover painting by Paul Swendsen for a reprint of Arthur C. Clarke's 1956 science fiction novel, The City and the Stars. In the novel, a young man in what is thought to be the last city on Earth looks for a way out. Swendsen worked as a matte painter and artist for ILM throughout the 80s and 90s.

This acrylic painting was done on a wood fiber hardboard and finished with a gloss acrylic varnish. It is labeled with a piece of paper adhered to the reverse side which reads, "The City and Stars Author: Arthur C. Clarke Copyright © 1990 Paul Swendsen". On the reverse side, the same information can be found hand painted in black and "The City" is handwritten in pencil. The item exhibits edgewear, but is in otherwise great condition.
