An SFX cable-controlled endoskeleton right arm from James Cameron's sci-fi action sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) warned Cyberdyne engineer Miles Dyson (Joe Morton) about the future consequences for humanity of the creation of his microprocessor. To convince Dyson, the T-800 removed the skin from his forearm with a knife, revealing the endoskeleton underneath.
The groundbreaking second instalment of the Terminator saga changed cinema forever and won four Oscars in the Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up categories at the 1992 Academy Awards. The latter two awards went to the legendary Stan Winston and his studio, who were responsible for building this endoskeleton arm. Winston has two more Academy Award wins in the Best Visual Effects category for his work on Aliens (1986) and Jurassic Park (1993).
This SFX arm's mechanical features allow the wrist and fingers to move and clench as they do in the aforementioned scene while being operated out of shot - though this is a right arm, whereas the one seen in close up is the left. The impressive amount of effort put into this animatronic, considering it was produced for such a small part of a scene, demonstrates the unprecedented standard of SFX set by Terminator 2. Each finger can be clenched individually or simultaneously with the others via five pin-headed cables that run up the inside of the arm. The wrist also has mobility, controlled by a joystick device connected by cables. These functional features created the miraculous illusion that the arm was lifeful. These mechanisms remain functional.
The arm is made of metal, as are the joystick and pin-headed cables that control the fingers. The joystick is embedded in a small wooden platform, and is connected to the arm via a network of metal and plastic cables. Dimensions (arm): 71 cm x 15.5 cm x 8.5 cm (28" x 6" x 3.25")
Contains mechanical components; see mechanical notice in the Buyer's Guide.
