Superman strains under the weight of a falling craft, his whole body thrown into the lift, in this original production cel from "The Last Son of Krypton Part III." This was the three-part opener that launched Superman: The Animated Series on Kids' WB in September 1996, the second show out of the Warner Bros. Animation house that had reinvented Batman, and the episode in which Lex Luthor's scheme to sell his Lexo-Skel suit to terrorists through corrupt agent John Corben runs headlong into the Man of Steel.

The look here is the deco Metropolis the show built itself around: bright, futuristic, optimistic, the bold geometry of the background block flattening behind the Kryptonian as he hangs in mid-flight. This is the visual world Bruce Timm settled on after deciding he could not out-do the Fleischer cartoons, and it gives every frame that clean, mid-century gleam.

The piece is a hand-painted production cel set over a studio-printed lithographic background. The Warner Bros. Animation Art seal sits at upper right, the mark of an official release through the studio's own channels, with the production number written along the top edge.

What lifts this particular sheet is the signing. The cel is signed in the lower left by director Dan Riba and writers Robert N. Skir and Stan Berkowitz, the credited creative hands on the episode, their three signatures in pen across the painted background.
