A golden spacesuit helmet from the production of the 2007 Danny Boyle sci-fi thriller Sunshine.
Set in the year 2057, Capa (Cillian Murphy) and a team of astronauts are sent to ‘reboot’ the sun with a nuclear device after it begins to fail, putting Earth into an ice age. When a signal is picked up from their predecessor, the Icarus I, they set course for the lost ship to find out what happened to her crew and why her mission failed.
The distinctive spacesuits were worn in multiple scenes but were notably worn by Capa and Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada) during the spacewalk sequence where they had to make repairs to a damaged portion of a shield panel. This version of the helmet was made for the production but was ultimately not used in the final cut of the film.
The uniquely designed helmet is made from fibreglass finished in bronze coloured paint with panels of gold foil applied. Gold coloured foil was chosen when designing the spacesuit to reflect a lot of the incoming heat radiation that the team would have experienced and has a similar appearance to space blankets. Angled in design, the helmet features side panels which have been repaired from previous damage. The helmet is big in shape, which allowed cameras to be mounted to the inside. A very thin visor adorns the top providing minimal vision. The underside of the helmet features the word ‘Skate’ written in black pen and the interior shows several exposed screws.
The gold foil has come unstuck from the sections that have been restored and the underside of the helmet displays light scratches and wear. There is also some paint wear on the outside and the helmet remains in overall very good condition.
Materials: Fibreglass, Man-Made Woven Fibres, Ferrous Metals.
