A pair of Stuart Freeborn and Yoda photographs from the production of Irvin Kershner’s 1980 Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back.

Make-up artist and creature effects legend Stuart Freeborn is responsible for creating numerous iconic Star Wars characters, including Yoda, Chewbacca and Jabba the Hut. Working from initial concept illustrations made by Ralph McQuarrie, Freeborn modelled many of Yoda’s features after his own and even used a photograph of Albert Einstein as inspiration for his wisened eyes and wrinkles. The two large blown-up photographs are printed in black-and-white on glossy AGFA ‘Sensatis’ paper. One depicts Freeborn holding an unpainted Yoda puppet head, whilst the other depicts him posing next to a complete and dressed puppet Yoda. The photographs exhibit some minor creasing from handling but otherwise remain in excellent condition.
