A concept sketch of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) hand-drawn by Ralph McQuarrie for George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) accompanied Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on his quest to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the clutches of the Empire.

Production illustrator McQuarrie, who is credited alongside Lucas for the origins of "Threepio," created this sketch early in pre-production. McQuarrie based the droid's design on the robot Maria from Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis, although the character ultimately seen on screen was both more masculine and less human-looking.

This sketch depicting a rear view of C-3PO is rendered in graphite on tissue paper. The sketch is also featured on page 27 of the Abrams publication Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie. The tissue is torn on the bottom left corner and exhibits crease lines throughout. Dimensions: 38.25 cm x 20.5 cm (15" x 8")
