A section of the Lars homestead used in the production of Star Wars: A New Hope.
The Lars moisture farm was situated in Tunisia where the bulk of the Tatooine location filming was undertaken. Converting sections of the Hotel Sidi Driss ' a traditional Berber house in the Tunisian desert town of Matmata ' the location was used in A New Hope and again in Attack of the Clones over 20 years later.
This section of the decoration from the Hotel Sidi Driss was recovered in 1995 by artist Philippe Vanni, who helped restore the hotel back to its original condition during the filming of Star Wars. The piece was recovered from the location after being discarded by the hotels owners, who stripped the decoration away after the filming of A New Hope. This particular section would have been used in the doorways of the hotel to add to the sci-fi look of the location.
Made of vacuum formed plastic, the panel has a repeating pattern of two lines of rectangular depressions, which run along the entire length of the section. The piece is finished in white with distressing applied to give it a dirty, worn look in keeping with Tatooines desert aesthetic. Displaying some wear to the paint from its time in use and years spent on the walls of the remote hotel, the piece remains in worn but fair condition with holes, chips and broken sections of panel at the edges.
