Howard Chaykin’s famous “Poster #1” designed to promote George Lucas’ upcoming sci-fi classic, Star Wars – Episode IV – A New Hope. Chaykin’s poster was debuted at the 1976 Comic-Con and was the first introduction for unsuspecting attendees to the Star Wars saga which involved a comic series through Marvel and drafted by the famous artist to help generate interest for the film’s release a year later.
Composed with high detail in Chaykin’s original comic-book style, this poster features a collage of key aspects from the film. Luke Skywalker stands at the forefront backed by a blaster-wielding Han Solo and Princess Leia, each flanked by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Vader’s mask is atop an image of the Death Star as X-Wings, Y-Wings, and T.I.E. Fighters ornament the lower half of the Poster. The Star Wars logo is present in the bottom right corner in red. The text at the bottom margin reads “Poster 1, 1st edition artist: Howard Chaykin, Luke Skywalker” A copyright symbol prefaces the final text, “The Star Wars Corporation 1976,” a detail only present on original posters, distinguishing the piece from re-prints that surfaced years later. This poster shows minimal signs of wear from age and is in overall great condition.
