‘The Mule’ filming car and pit lane jack used in the production of Ron Howard’s 2013 sports-drama, Rush. Based on a true story, the film follows racing icons Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) during their infamous 1976 Formula One season. As their rivalry on and off the track begins to take its toll, a near-fatal injury leaves Lauda fighting for the championship and Hunt in pole position to take the title.

This eye-catching car was used by film crew members in order to film footage of the race cars from every angle as they circle the various circuits during both the Formula Three and Formula One championships. Interestingly, the car originally belonged to British Touring Car driver Rob Austin during his time in Formula Three, with Austin appearing in the film portraying Formula One driver Brett Lunger. The shell of the car is fibreglass with a black metal frame and a white and red paint finish. There are a large number of decals on the body of the car, including various logos such as Heuer, Ferrari and Agip, numerous ‘Rob Austin Racing’ emblems and comical ‘Donkey Track Rides’ and ‘£2.50 per ride’ amongst others.

A black metal camera track is located on both sides of the car upon which a camera rig would have been positioned to allow for the full length of each car to be filmed. A battery is strapped to the left hand side of the vehicle. The car is fitted with Dunlop SP Sport tyres and a simple cockpit with a red safety belt and black cushioned steering wheel. Overall ‘The Mule’ measures approximately 320cm long, 110cm tall and 170cm wide (126 x 43.25 x 67”), weighing approximately 400kg and remains in very good condition. Also included is a pit-lane jack used in the movie.
