A replica Ferrari 312T race car used in the production of Ron Howard’s 2013 sports-drama, Rush. Based on a true story, the film follows racing icons Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) during their infamous 1976 Formula One season. As their rivalry on and off the track begins to take its toll, a near-fatal injury leaves Lauda fighting for the championship and Hunt in pole position to take the title.

This is Niki Lauda’s Ferrari 312T Formula One car made for the Ron Howard 2013 biopic Rush. The Ferrari 312T was the model used in the early part of the 1976 season prior to a change in regulations demanding the removal of the ‘high’ air box seen here.

Only nine ‘movie copies’ were made for the movie; the rest were actually real vintage race cars from the era loaned to the production. The shell of the car is fibreglass and metal painted the iconic Ferrari red with white decals, and plain metal front and rear wings. Heuer, Agip and Goodyear sponsor logos are dotted around, and the championship winner “1” sits proudly on the nose and either side of the air intake next to “Niki Lauda” in flowing white script. This model is fitted with wet tyres and a padded steering wheel. The cockpit is simple with a small round headrest, red safety harness and metal fixtures that would have held a fire extinguisher with a clear plastic screen across the front.

The chassis were adapted to enable a number of different shells to be fitted, which allowed the main racer’s cars to be called into existence without the need for a full complement of cars. So good were these copies that from a distance not even actual 1976 mechanics could identify the difference between them and the originals. It is believed that this particular vehicle is built upon a Formula Ford chassis supplied by French racing car manufacturer, Mygale and has a 2-litre Duratec Ford engine with a dry sump lubrication system and Hewland FT200 H pattern change gearbox. It has been emptied of all fuel and fluids and the battery has been removed. Overall it measures 460cm long, 130cm tall and 200cm wide (181 x 51.25 x 78.75”), weighing approximately 500kg. There is a small crack in the right-hand side of the screen but it otherwise remains in very good production used condition. Also included is a generic pit-lane jack.
