“And that's why, in a straight fight, a shark would probably beat a Dracula”
A rare and original stop motion puppet from Aardman Animation’s 2012 adventure comedy The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!
Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) is determined to win the Pirate of the Year Award and defeat his rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek). His quest takes him and his crew from their home on Blood Island, to the streets of Victorian London.
The soldier can be seen standing next to a carriage with a drink in hand, as part of a group who invite the Pirate Captain for a celebratory drink in the “Hook Line & Sinker” before departing from London.
Different elements of the puppet are constructed from a variety of materials and an intricate internal metal armature allowed the animators to control its movements. The skin of the puppet is made from silicone and the soldier’s blonde coloured hair is made from resin. A small amount of plasticine has been used around the eyes to allow for maximum expression and he also features a detachable mouthpiece made from ‘Rapid Prototyped’ resin, with the reference ‘Percy 24/05’ marked inside his head.
The soldier’s outfit is made from foam latex and consists of an elaborate red tail coat, black trousers and square-toed lace up brogues. Intricately embellished, the jacket features gold coloured epaulettes on the shoulders, a shoulder belt with a faux-gold outline and small buttons running down the front and on the cuffs.
The puppet comes displayed on a bespoke display base, painted to look like worn and warped decking of a pirate ship. Minor wear is present from production use and a button on the Soldier’s jacket is missing leaving some glue remnants. However, the puppet remains in very good condition.
Materials: Silicone, Plasticine, Resin, Foam Latex, Ferrous Metals.
