A portrait of Marilyn Monroe from photographer Milton Greene's "Peasant Sitting" series. Greene wanted to showcase Monroe's ability as a dramatic actress and, while walking through the 20th Century Fox studio backlot with the actress, came up with the idea of her posing as a peasant. Monroe donned the costume worn by Jennifer Jones in her Oscar-winning performance in The Song of Bernadette (1943), while the French village set from What Price Glory (1952) was used as the backdrop. The photo series was shot on 24 May 1954.
This large-format photo is printed on Hahnemuhle Albrecht Durer paper and features Greene's printed signature in the bottom right corner. The copyright stamp of the Milton H. Green Archives Inc. is present on the reverse, along with the handwritten date "2007". The official print ID ("993, EX3"), printing date ("3/14/03") and the signature of the estate manager ("Joshua Greene") are all written in pencil on the reverse.
