A clapperboard used in the production of the 2004 British drama The Libertine. Based on the play by Stephen Jeffreys, the film tells the story of John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester (Johnny Depp), a poet in the court of King Charles II (John Malkovich), whose weakness to temptation drives him to a young death.
One of the most iconic and memorable aspects of the movie making industry has to be the clapperboard. For decades this has been a vital piece of equipment that enables not just sound and image to be synchronised, but to also advise the viewer of the raw footage the exact details of the upcoming shot. The simple monochromatic device has become a symbolic image synonymous with films, and is still used to this day.

Well used on location for the British production, this acrylic and wood clapperboard has the title running along the top with the name of the director (Laurence Dunmore) and cinematographer (Alexander Melman) beneath, all of which are engraved into the acrylic plate. There are spaces in the boxes below to write the slate and take. The clapper stick displays some wear but remains loose, allowing for a sharp snap when closed. The letter “B,” denoting the camera for which the clapperboard was to be used, is engraved in the bottom right corner with blue paint inlaid.

In very good production-used condition with only minor wear overall from use on set, the clapperboard has been signed by Johnny Depp, the film’s lead, and is presented in a stunning bespoke frame featuring the film’s title artwork and an opening front panel allowing access to the piece.
