A framed clapperboard from the Ridley Scott fantasy film Legend. One of Scott’s earliest films, this was also one of the earliest films in the career of Tom Cruise, who plays the hero Jack in the film, and was nominated for a variety of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Makeup.
One of the most iconic and memorable aspects of the movie making industry has to be the clapperboard. For decades this has been a vital piece of equipment that enables not just sound and image to be synchronised, but to also advise the viewer of the raw footage the exact details of the upcoming shot. The simple monochromatic device has become a symbolic image synonymous with films, and is still used to this day.

This original production used board still clearly reads “Legend”, with credits for director Ridley Scott and hand painted on, with the Director of Photography Alex Thomson. The date is for the 14th December 1984, with additional notes highlighting the fact it was last used for an “Exterior Universe” shot, though the details of the slate and take have since been rubbed off. The clapstick is loose but remains firmly attached, and remains in good working order. The rear of the board has the text “Vista Vision” chalked on the back.

The clapperboard comes custom hinge-framed (for easy item removal), in an intricately laser-cut mount board display featuring the films logo and picture and measuring 81cm x 55cm x 7cm (32” x 21.5” x 3”). The clapperboard itself measures 39cm x 35cm (15.5” x 14”) and is a fantastic piece fitting for any collection.
