A King Lear's (Lawrence Olivier) night gown and dagger (plus photo) from Michael Elliott’s 1983 TV movie adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, King Lear.
This set consists of three items, a night gown, dagger and a photo. The night gown is made of cotton and decorated with lace up the front and secured with a cream-coloured crocheted button. The manufacturers label shows that this item was made by Bermans + Nathans of Berwick Street, London and bears the note ‘SIRE LAURENCE OLIVIER 18901 KING LEAR.’ The night gown bears some small marks of use, wear and storage but otherwise is in good condition.
The dagger is made of metal and tarnished to give the impression of age. The handle is made of wood and decorated with intricately woven leather straps, held in place with small brass nails. This item shows some signs of production wear, notably in a couple of looser leather straps but otherwise is in very good condition.
The photo is marked ‘Copyright picture Granada TV’ and shows Sir Laurence Oliver in performance, holding the dagger. The photo has some yellow age spots and signs of wear but otherwise is in good condition.
