A collection of tapes from the recording of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1967 single "Burning of the Midnight Lamp". The band started working on the song in May 1967 at Olympic Sound Studios in London, before finishing it in July 1967 at Mayfair Studio in New York City. The single was released in the UK on 19 August 1967. This lot comes from the collection of Patricia "Trixie" Sullivan, personal assistant to Mike Jeffery between 1966 and 1973.
The lot comprises five tapes. The tape numbered "33" is an unreleased/uncirculated alternative take, or demo, on a BASF reel-to-reel tape labelled "Rough Mix", and is accompanied by its original box, which lists the artist as "Jimmy Hendricks [sic]". Tape "34" is a backing track without Hendrix's vocals, and Hendrix has handwritten "Send back to Chas - JH" on the box in red ink. (Chas Chandler was the producer on the record.) Tape "35" is a copy of tape "34". Tape "47" is a mono backing track without Hendrix's vocals on a BASF reel-to-reel tape. And the box of tape "48" is hand-labelled "2 Trk Master" and "Reject", indicating a vastly different take. It features Hendrix's vocals and is on a Scotch reel-to-reel tape. Each tape box has wear from age, storage and use, with two of them in a particularly fragile condition. Dimensions (largest box): 28 cm x 27.5 cm x 2 cm (11" x 10.75" x 0.75")
