One of the most basic and best known tools of film making and also one of its iconic symbols, is the clapperboard or slate. This is the instrument that allows the editor to exactly sync the sound and image together. The board also carries vital information like the scene number, the take, film stock, unit, date and camera designation/angle (important when a scene is filmed from multiple angles at the same time, commonplace on action movies). The information is written on the board by the clapper loader under the ultimate supervision of the script supervisor. The board also has the name of the production, the director and the director of photography.
Modern boards tend to be made from white or coloured acrylic which are much easier to see in weaker lighting than the old traditional style black chalkboards used in many classic movies. Modern productions also sometimes use digital boards with electronic frame numbers rapidly changing, this helps when computer effects are being used. The familiar diagonal stripes on the top make it easier for the editor to see the precise moment of impact should the lighting or background make it difficult. Slates come in a variety of sizes depending on their use. Much smaller ones for closer insert shots or miniature work and oversized ones where the clapper is initially filmed from a distance. They have always been very popular with collectors.
This clapperboard was used on the model set of the epic Bond movie The World Is Not Enough. It came directly from the estate of noted focus puller and camera assistant Frank Elliott. An identical clapperboard can be seen in an exclusive behind the scenes image of Frank, who also worked on a number of Bond movies during is illustrious career and also worked on many significant productions including Where Eagles Dare, A Passage to India and Le Mans. The name for the director of this board is John Richardson as it was a model unit shot. He has a distinguished career in model miniatures and special effects covering movies like The Omen, The Day of the Jackal, Superman and Aliens. John also did all the Harry Potter films and is a regular on the Bond set.
