Half Sheet (22" x 28")
Very Fine- on Paper
Fox, 1929
The gorgeous half-sheet offered here features Baxter and actress Dorothy Burgess in a romantic embrace, helping to define the swashbuckling ladies-man that Baxter portrayed.
Never folded prior to backing, the poster looks wonderful after receiving professional touchup to creases, a couple of tears, and a minor chip in the bottom border. The borders have been airbrushed for a nice finish to the restoration.
Although you may not realize it simply by looking at the impressive half-sheet pictured here, you're seeing several important film history "firsts": In Old Arizona (1928) was the first talking Western and the first talking Cisco Kid picture. It was also nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning one: Best Actor for Warner Baxter. It also paved the way for developing the "singing cowboy" trope, as Baxter does some crooning in this picture. This was the third screen appearance of O. Henry's famous cowboy star, The Cisco Kid, as two silent features preceded it. The original Kid was an unrepentant, murderous desperado who enjoyed shooting innocent men and women for sport and, at the time of the story, had committed at least 18 murders. The character that Baxter portrays and that Cesar Romero and Duncan Reynaldo would take up in later years is far more family-friendly and charming, a fitting role model for children and adults, and a perfect complement to other Western stars of the day.
