An original prop sword used in Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning epic Gladiator. Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.
One of Maximus’ most memorable fights in the film is with Tigris of Gaul (Sven-Ole Thorsen) in a battle laced with treachery on the part of Commodus, desperate to see Maximus fall before his fans in the Colosseum. Tigris is a massive, hulking veteran opponent and an undefeated warrior within the arena. This sword is used by Tigris in the fight, paired with a massive battle axe, and is put to good use, keeping Maximus off-balance and almost forcing him to be mauled by one of the tigers ringing the arena. Eventually, however, Maximus disarms him, stabbing him through the foot and effectively removing his challenger from the fight.
This stunt prop is made from a dense rubber, with a metal core running through it to retain the shape of the piece, and features a broad blade and tiger claw detailing on the guard and pommel. The weapon has a very realistic paint finish, with a mix of steel and bronze finishes across its length.
Well used on set, the piece has some slight wear to the paint finish but remains in an otherwise very good production-used condition. To ensure this incredible piece receives the full exposure it deserves, it also comes presented in a stunning bespoke display featuring a laser cut mount board incorporating the movie title, stills from the movie and a brief description, LED lighting and an opening front panel allowing easy, direct access to the piece. It measures 63cm x 101cm x 16cm deep (24.75“ x 39.75“ x 6.25”) and would make a fantastic centrepiece for any collection.
