A sword carried by a Praetorian Guardsman in Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning epic Gladiator. Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.
This gladius was carried by one of the elite guard of the Roman emperors Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) and Commodus. The Praetorian Guard were under the emperor’s direct command, being ordered by Commodus to execute Maximus in the forests of Germania and later seen in the arena as Commodus fights with Maximus to the death. Such swords are featured in the scene in which Commodus begs his guard for a sword, only for Maximus’ former lieutenant Quintus (Tomas Arana) to sheath their swords and let the events in the arena play out.

The sword is made of wood with a metal blade and a canvas sheath, bound in metal fixtures and a leather sling. The sword guard has a metal band into which is engraved “SPQR”. The blade remains straight and level with the grip. The grip assembly is varnished to a deep black, which has been worn away slightly through use on the production.

The sword has lost some of its finish through use, however, the sword and sheath remains in an overall very good production-used condition.
