A prop flail used in the production of Ridley Scott’s Academy Award winning epic Gladiator. Betrayed by his Emperor’s son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and sold into slavery, Roman general Maximus (Russell Crowe) finds his calling in the arena as a gladiator. But when a festival of games begins in Commodus’ honour, Maximus returns to Rome with thoughts of revenge for his lost Emperor and family.
This flail was used by one of the gladiators in Maximus’ opening battle in the arena. The piece is made of rubber to prevent injury during use in the film’s fight sequences, with a twisted leather “rope” and wooden grip with metal banding. The head of the flail is finished in metallic paint to replicate the look of iron. Some of the spikes on the flail have become bent through use and time spent in storage, however the piece remains in otherwise very good condition.
