A piece of original artwork used in the production of the classic sci-fi adventure film Ghostbusters. This piece of art was used in the visualisation of scenes in downtown Manhattan after the spirits are released from the Ghostbusters’ chamber, descending on New York from the heavens on the eve of the coming of Gozer the Gozerian.
Acquired from the collection of visual effects guru Richard Edlund, the piece of artwork was used for visualising a planned shot of ghosts running amok in a New York subway train. The image shows a large flying spectre as well as a dead cabby sat on a bench in a subway carriage. While this shot was not seen in the final cut of the film, the various elements would be reused to illustrate the havoc being wrought downtown, with the laughing ghost scaring Subway passengers and the cabby picking up fares using an empty taxi.

The piece of artwork is rendered in pastels on black paper with a secondary illustration above showing how the shot was to be achieved. Notes below and to the side give suggestions on lenses for use in acquiring the visual effects shot and for the motion of the ghostly matter within the carriage. Another drawing alongside shows the design of the smiling ghost, with notes suggesting action as it flies across the screen.

A fascinating insight into the production of the film’s visual effects, this fantastic piece of artwork remains in very good condition and is presented in a stunning bespoke framed display featuring the film’s title artwork.
