Three printed storyboard binders from Matthew Robbins and Hal Barwood’s fantasy film Dragonslayer. A large number of storyboards were used to help plan the extensive dragon special effects in the film. Phil Tippett is credited as a Dragon Supervisor on the ILM visual effects team that worked on the film. He worked extensively on the go-motion animation of the dragon Vermithrax Pejorative as well as supervising the color of the dragon puppets of all sizes. The combination of the new go-motion technology, extravagant large-scale puppets and a beloved design led to Vermithrax Pejorative being considered one of the best, if not the best, dragons of all time.Tippett was nominated for Best Visual Effects for his work on this film at the 54th Academy Awards^®.

These two black binders and one yellow project binder are all filled with storyboard prints. The thinner black binder and the yellow binder contain storyboards primarily related to the dragon’s head and neck movement while the thicker black binder contain storyboards related to most effects. The boards in each black binder include element breakdowns on the bottom of each page, as well as handwritten sketches and notes in pencil, like ‘HEAD MOVES TO LEFT VIOLENTLY.’ Found inside the pockets of the black binders are several additional storyboard prints, a packet of printed notes on the full-scale muppet head, a black and white photo of the dragon miniature puppet and a page of handwritten animation notes from Tippett on yellow legal paper. Several pages throughout feature hand-drawn sketches and notes. There are approximately 250 pages in this lot.
