A Vermithrax Pejorative puppet head casting and full-size dragon scale from the production of Matthew Robbins' Dragonslayer. After master sorcerer Ulrich of Cragganmore (Ralph Richardson) was killed, his young apprentice, Galen Brandwardyn (Peter MacNicol), was sent to slay the dragon Vermithrax Pejorative.
The dragon was brought to life with a combination of go-motion puppetry (a process similar to stop-motion pioneered by dragon supervisor Phil Tippett), static models, and a 40-foot hydraulic model. For their work on the film, Tippett and Dennis Muren, Ken Ralston, and Brian Johnson received an Academy Award® nomination for Best Visual Effects.
This lot originated from a crew member on the production. It consists of an unfinished foam casting for the horned head of a small-scale Vermithrax Pejorative go-motion puppet with cardboard applied to its bottom; a fiberglass and resin scale for the full-size dragon painted dark green and brown and textured to appear reptilian; and a detachable wooden base embedded with a foam-padded nail for mounting the head. The bottom tip of the scale is unpainted, the casting exhibits peeling to its exterior and creasing to the cardboard, and the nail on the base should be handled with caution. Dimensions: (largest) 12" x 12" x 4" (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm x 10.25 cm)
Estimate: $1,200 - 2,400
