A full-size display figure of Santi (Junio Valverde) from Guillermo del Toro's gothic horror The Devil's Backbone. Carlos (Fernando Tielve) encountered the ghostly apparition of Santi several times at the orphanage and discovered the tragic events that led to Santi's mysterious disappearance.
This figure was created by DDT, the Spanish studio behind the make-up and special effects for the film, founded by Academy Award®-winners David Martí and Montse Ribe. This model is a reproduction of the one created at the behest of del Toro for the 2016 exhibition "Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters" and displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Del Toro owns the original model from the exhibition.
The figure is constructed from polyester and polyurethane resins around a metal skeleton, with clay pressed pieces from the original production moulds attached. It is finished in sculpting clay and painted with enamels and acrylics.
Santi's pale skin is decorated with detailed cracking, notably on the head. Red-coloured cotton wool-like material - representing the blood always seen floating upwards from his head wound - is inserted into a slot on the head's temple. The figure is dressed in a brown natural hair wig; a diamond-patterned knitted vest; a heavily stained shirt; and a pair of brown textured shorts. The clothing is intentionally distressed, adding to the figure's creepy aesthetic, and the statue exhibits minimal signs of wear. Dimensions: 40 cm x 30 cm x 140 cm (15 3/4" x 11 3/4" x 55 1/4")
