Malcolm McDowell’s shield from a costume fitting held during the preproduction of the Stanley Kubrick classic, A Clockwork Orange. This tribal shield was wielded by Malcolm who played the role of Alex in the twisted movie during a costume fitting at Kubrick’s house in Abbot’s Mead, and a picture of this can be seen on page 413 of the giant book “The Stanley Kubrick Archives” which goes into enormous detail with behind the scenes access and a wealth of information on every production he made, including never before seen pictures such as this one of Malcolm McDowell.
The shield is made from wood with felt covering the back with some canvass straps and fibreglass detailing painted black dividing the shield into two parts which each originally contained a patch of Zebra fur. Sadly over the years with poor storage this great piece has some chipped and missing fibreglass, and one of the Zebra patches is missing, but is still a perfect match to the one seen in the photo, and a great little piece from the production. It measures 59cm x 77cm (23.25” x 30.25”). Interestingly in the photo he is wearing a helmet that was reused in a 1972 episode of Doctor Who (“The Mutants”), the costume department must have raided the same costume stores as the BBC!
