A clapperboard, production photograph and call sheet used in the production of the star-studded war film A Bridge Too Far. Eager to cross the Rhine river and deliver a knockout blow to the Germans, the Allies plan a major assault on bridges throughout the Netherlands to secure their path to Germany. One of the most iconic and memorable aspects of the movie making industry has to be the clapperboard. For decades this has been a vital piece of equipment that enables not just sound and image to be synchronised, but to also advise the viewer of the raw footage the exact details of the upcoming shot. The simple monochromatic device has become a symbolic image synonymous with films, and is still used to this day.

Well used on the production of the film, this insert shot clapperboard has the title “A Bridge Too Far” written on a length of tape with the name of director Richard Attenborough and director of photography Geoffrey Unsworth written beneath. Spaces in the boxes at the centre of the clapperboard slate are present to write in chalk the scene and take. The date of its last use is marked as 2-10-76 at the bottom of the board for an exterior day shot. A data sheet for taking notes on each take is still attached at the rear. The clapper stick remains in a loose condition, allowing for a sharp snap when closed. The piece is accompanied with a call sheet and travel order as well as an original production photo from the shooting of the Nijmegen river crossing sequence, showing a crew member with a similar clapperboard in action!

Displaying plenty of wear from its time on use on set, the clapperboard remains in overall good production-used condition. The clapperboard measures 20cm x 14cm x 1.5cm (8" x 5.5" x .75").
