Batman's (Christian Bale) cowl from Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) wore his cowl as he battled the Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) and his own former mentor, Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson), to save Gotham City from destruction.
The film introduced an all-new Batsuit designed by Academy Award®-winner Lindy Hemming, with the cowl and armor sculpted by Julian Murray. Drawing inspiration from more contemporary comic book interpretations of the Dark Knight, Wayne's Begins cowl was intended to provide more neck movement than prior cinematic iterations.
This cowl is cast in foam latex and incorporates a layer of fine-mesh, stretchable "power netting" for added structural strength. Its interior reveals multiple lines from a complex matrix mold process, in which the core was installed in separate sections to achieve a seamless exterior finish. Several layers of thin fabric lining are adhered to the interior - particularly at the back, sides, and around the eye openings - with select elements hand-stitched in place.
Circular sheets of material are installed internally to cover the ear openings, likely added after the ears were reinforced with internal supports. A horizontal strip of material, possibly adhesive to secure the cowl to the performer's face at critical points, is present at the interior top of the neckline. The cowl features Batman's signature pointed ears and aggressively sculpted brows with "109" hand-marked on both the interior crown and chin. While the precise meaning of this marking is unclear given the improbability of more than 100 cowls being produced, a similarly high number was marked on another example previously sold by Propstore. The neck retains original attachment loops for securing the cowl to the rest of the Batsuit ensemble.
The cowl exhibits minor surface scuffing and very slight wear to the foam, as well as a slightly bent ear tip, as would be expected from production use and age. Also included is the original production-used display stand constructed from PVC pipe with a vac-formed plastic cowl support.
Estimate: $60,000 - 120,000
