A full-size Caterpillar P-5000 powered work loader arm from James Cameron's Aliens. In the climactic finale, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) commandeered a high-tech power loader to fight the xenomorph Queen aboard the USS Sulaco.
The P-5000s were designed by renowned production designer Syd Mead in collaboration with Cameron. Both full-size and model miniature versions were created for the Queen battle, with the larger mechanised exoskeleton constructed around and operated from the inside by stuntman John Lees with Weaver in the operator's seat.
The resulting sequence is considered among the greatest ever produced in science-fiction cinema, contributing to the film's massive box office grosses and earning seven Academy Award® nominations, including wins for both Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Effects Editing. Since the film's release, Ripley's power loader has been immortalised in toys, arcade games, and references in other popular media.
Labelled "Power Loader 2" and stamped "N1724," this full-size jointed arm is constructed from vacuum-formed plastic inset with metal rods. A static dense rubber controller with a rubber telephone cord attached is mounted to one side, while a rotatable wheel is mounted to a rod protruding from the base. The interior features a slot for inserting a stuntperson's arm. Also included is a replica of the round foam wheel component at the wrist between the claw and upper arm.
The arm is applied with red decals and intentionally distressed by production to appear well-used with grime, blood staining, and liquid streaks added to the surface. It is believed to have been repainted yellow with industrial black striping and detailing down its length following production, giving it a slightly different appearance from what is seen in the final cut. The plastic exhibits breaks throughout, including missing panels on either end of the arm and cracks along its joints, as well as flaking paint from age and production. Dimensions: 185.5 cm x 63.5 cm x 76.5 cm (73" x 25" x 30")
