A matte painting of the underside of the Discovery One hand-painted by matte artist Matthew Yuricich for Peter Hyams' 2010: The Year We Make Contact. The crew of the Soviet spacecraft Leonov, including Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) and HAL 9000 creator R. Chandra (Bob Balaban), attempted to connect with Discovery One after its mission to Jupiter failed in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In the early stages of production, Yuricich served as chief matte artist for Entertainment Effects Group (EEG), the visual effects company founded by 2001 mastermind Douglas Trumbull. Later in production, the firm merged with Richard Edlund's BOSS Film Studios, though Yuricich's position remained unchanged. Ultimately, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards®, including one for its groundbreaking visual effects work.
This painting depicting the underside of the Discovery One was rendered by Yuricich in mixed media, including acrylic paint and graphite, on masonite, for a close-up shot ultimately unused in the final cut. It is hand-annotated "Top," "AP," and "2" on the right side and applied with a strip of tape hand-labeled "DS-1." The painting exhibits curling at its corners, some slashes through the paint in its upper right corner, and various scratches, smudges, and residue from storage and age. Dimensions: 38" x 80" x 2" (96.5 cm x 203.25 cm x 5 cm)
