Protecting the imperial skies of George Lucas’ Star Wars universe are a number of different craft. Perhaps the one best remembered by film goers in 1977 was the TIE Fighter. These beautifully designed craft were a constant thorn in the side of our intrepid heroes as they went about ridding the universe of tyranny. Everyone remembers the ominous screech as these machines swept across the screen in the scenes that were effectively re-creations of World War II dog fights.

Controlling these speedy ships were the brave TIE Pilots. Decked in black, always a Hollywood sign of wickedness, these easily expendable guys seemed to pour from every angle when attacking. The TIE (an acronym for Twin Ion Engines, the power supply of the future) was designed by Colin Cantwell of ILM.

The instantly recognizable helmet was made from black vac-formed plastic by Andrew Ainsworth. It was inspired from sketches by Ralph McQuarrie with refinements by costume designer John Mollo. The lenses are grey tinted and the overall look is completed by hand painted details and paper stickers. This exact helmet is the first one seen on screen as the Milenium Falcon is attacked while escaping the Death Star. You can see the unique placement of the decals and also the silver mohawk detailling to the center.
