Hero Space Suit

This spectacular looking spacesuit comes from the set of the 1998 Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster Armageddon it is presented on a custom made display stand (with metallic asteroid effect base) and wired to the mains power for full control of the lighting system.

This outfit is actually a mixture of a couple of characters. The helmet is for William Fichtner for his portrayal of Colonel William Sharp (pilot of the shuttle “Freedom”), the bulk of the body suit is for Ben Afflecks character of A.J.

The costume was designed by Magali Guidasci for which she was nominated for a Saturn award. The main body of the suit is constructed from a very heavy weave nylon, there are rubber pads at the knees and elbows – essential protection while scaling a speeding meteor. The body is detailed with numerous metal, plastic and resin accoutrements designed to look like integral and critical components. The rubber and neoprene gloves are connected via a metal locking ring. The boots are made by Adidas and have been convincingly dressed by the art department.

The chest section has a number of controls and instruments and three sections light up. These sections can change colour with the adjustment of components and the flicking of switches. The demisting fan for the helmet is also controlled from the chest panel.

The helmet is made from fibreglass and also lights up. It is decorated with a number of stickers including a Stars and Stripes flag. The wide acrylic visor is a most distinctive shape and allows clear visibility of the actors. The whole electrical system is powered by an elaborate battery system in backpack.
