An angel statue used in the production of James Watkins’ 2012 horror-drama, The Woman In Black. The film follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as he travels to a remote village terrorised by a vengeful ghost. Kipps finds himself in a race against time to discover the mystery of the spectre woman before she takes all the children of Crythin Gifford.
This statue and others like it would have been used to dress Nicholas Daily’s (Sidney Johnston) mausoleum during the plaque-scratching scene as Elizabeth Daily (Janet McNeer) is overcome by the spirit of her dead son. It consists of a sleeping angel draped over an ornate plinth and a removable empty plaque. The angel is cast from biscuit foam and painted to resemble stone. The plinth is made from wood and painted to match the angel. The plaque is made from plaster and painted once again to look like stone. The statue suffered significant wear from use and time spent in storage and the angel’s right hand is missing. In some places there is evident loss of paintwork revealing the blue biscuit foam beneath. However, the piece remains in fair production-used condition measuring approximately 90cm x 56cm x 102cm (35.5” x 22” x 40.25”).
