A coffin used in the production of James Watkins’ 2012 horror-drama, The Woman In Black. The film follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as he travels to a remote village terrorised by a vengeful ghost. Kipps finds himself in a race against time to discover the mystery of the spectre woman before she takes all the children of Crythin Gifford.
This coffin would have been used to bury Jennet Humfrye (Liz White) in a private family cemetery on Eel Marsh House’s grounds. The exterior of the coffin is made from wood with resin details and metal loops. The interior is lined with blue padding on both the base and lid that has been finished with lace edgings. The coffin contains a blue pillow with white trim and a blue cushion base. For production purposes, the coffin’s exterior is coated in mud and the interior has been dressed to resemble mould and aging. The metal loops provide a locking mechanism for the coffin and remain functional. The piece as a whole remains in very good production-used condition measuring approximately 210cm x 73cm x 60cm (82.75” x 28.75” x 23.75”).
