A Salamisian soldier’s SFX shield from Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 adaptation of Homer’s great epic Troy.
After falling for the beautiful Helen (Diane Kruger), Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) smuggles her aboard the ship of his brother, Hector (Eric Bana) to take her to Troy. Seeking revenge, the Greek armies led by Agamemnon (Brian Cox) and the legendary warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) set sail for Troy, where one of history’s greatest wars will be waged.
This shield and others like it were made for the production and we held by the actors playing Salamisian soldiers fighting against the Trojans. The shield is made of fibreglass and painted to look like bronze. It is lined with polyurethane and has been fitted with tubing on the back, which would have been used to fire an arrow out of the shield at speed, giving the impression of it being hit by the arrow.
The shield has some wear from production use and age, including scuffing and scratches to the paint work. The lining at the back of the shield has worn away slightly in places and the shape has become slightly warped. There is traces of sand from its use on the shoot. Overall it remains in a good, production-used condition.
