A 1:8-scale MiG-28 model miniature from the production of Tony Scott's Top Gun. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and his fellow pilots flew their Grumman F-14 Tomcats in aerial battle against enemy MiG-28s throughout the film. The MiG-28 is a fictional aircraft portrayed in the film by both full-size Northrop F-5F Tiger II fighters and model miniatures, with this particular miniature custom-fabricated for production but ultimately unseen in the final cut.
A box office success, Top Gun won both an Academy Award® and Golden Globe for Best Original song. It received three additional Academy Award® nominations and a second Golden Globe nomination. The film is highly regarded for its aerial combat sequences, which used a mixture of live-action photography of actual jets and visual effects work with models of various scales. The model miniature work was completed under VFX supervisor Gary Gutierrez. Filming models such as this measured approximately 6' in length.
This lot originates from Planet Hollywood. It consists of an approximately 1:8-scale fiberglass model miniature based on a Northrop F-5F Tiger II fighter. It is painted black with white lining around the edges of the wings and stabilizers. The lot shows evidence of wear consistent with use, handling, and age; including scuffs in the finish and cracks where the wings and stabilizers attach.
