This hand-painted original production cel of Tom was created during production of Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992), the first full-length theatrical feature starring animation's much loved and most enduring double act. It bears the official Hanna-Barbera Art Program seal and is hand-signed by Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, the legendary creators whose work helped define the golden age of television animation.
In this apprehensive scene, (never walk under a piano!) Tom's expression is priceless, and reflects the sensitivity and character depth that the feature film sought to explore, a mature evolution of the mischievous rivalry audiences had loved for over fifty years. The precision of the linework and tonal colouring shows the continuation of traditional cel craftsmanship even as the industry was on the cusp of digital change.
Released in 1992, Tom and Jerry: The Movie represented a bold return to hand-painted, theatrical storytelling after decades of television success. Following the popularity of The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980-82) and Tom & Jerry Kids (1990-93), the feature brought the iconic pair to a new generation, blending nostalgia with contemporary musical adventure. The film performed strongly across international markets and became a staple of 1990s animation, proving that Tom and Jerry's timeless chemistry could captivate audiences anew.
By the 1990s, many of Hanna-Barbera's original production cels from the classic shorts had been lost or destroyed, making surviving examples of later studio-signed artwork highly collectible. The Hanna-Barbera Art Program ensured these original hand-painted cels were preserved and authenticated for the growing community of collectors who had grown up with the characters.
Now more than thirty years on, this piece embodies the bridge between eras, a tribute to the artistry of hand-drawn animation and a reminder of how Tom and Jerry: The Movie revitalised one of animation's greatest partnerships for a new generation.
Beautifully presented, signed by both creators, and marked with the official seal, it stands as a lasting celebration of the characters' humour, history, and heart.
