Deep Dive Crew styrofoam cups and jacket with a clapperboard from James Cameron's Titanic. The Russian scientific research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh made over 50 voyages in its time, including expeditions to the shipwreck of the real life Titanic. Cameron led two expeditions during production for the present day scenes of the film.
James Cameron used a specialized camera that filmed through the submarine porthole. Descending two submarines at a time, Cameron in one and co-producer/cameraman Al Giddings in the other, each with a camera to shoot plates of the other sub descending down to the Titanic wreck without audio for footage identification. Slates were done through the portholes before descension with only one load of film shot at a time to avoid re-slating under water. The slates were also used for the Escondido shoot, where they recreated Titanic interiors in a giant Navy pool. The Remotely Operated Vehicle would go into different rooms and record that footage.
As a tradition, members of the dive/film crew would decorate a cup to place in a mesh bag tethered to the submarine as a memento of pressure depth, crushing the cups to a quarter of their original size.
This lot, originating from a crew member, consists of two styrofoam cups featuring hand-drawn illustrations of the Titanic dated 1995 with their sailing coordinates; a cotton and wool Woolrich jacket (Size L) with the expedition title embroidered on the front; and an acrylic and vinyl wrapped wooden top clapperboard with vinyl and handwritten lettering for Cameron and Giddings. This lot exhibits fragile material to the cups and grime and peeling vinyl on the clapperboard. Dimensions: (clapperboard) 11.25" x 9.5" x 1" (28.75 cm x 24.25 cm x 2.75 cm)
