A shield used by French cavalrymen in the sci-fi adventure film Timeline. Sent back in time, a group of students are caught between the French and English armies at the French village of Castlegard during the Hundred Years War and have to find a way to their own time – and change history in the process.
These shields can be seen being carried by the French mounted infantry at several points throughout the film, particularly in the final battle at La Roque Castle. Easily distinguished from the shields of the English or the regular infantry, these shields are oblong with a cut-out for the wearer's vision in combat. The shield is made of rigid board wrapped in canvas with riveted leather staps on the rear. The front of the shield is padded for additional protection and durability while in use on set.
The design of the shield is a yellow stripe on a white field with black detailing in the top and bottom halves. The finish is varnished and intentionally distressed, though some damage will have occurred during the film's many hand to hand combat sequences. The backstrap was also marked “F†by the costume department.
The shield measures 59cm (23â€) high and 49cm (19â€) wide.
