Athos' (Kiefer Sutherland) Tunic & Hat worn in the 1993 Disney adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas story, The Three Musketeers. In the film, a young man named D'Artagnan aspires to join the ranks of the Musketeers who have been recently disbanded by the villainous Cardinal Richelieu’s (Tim Curry) Unfortunately for Richelieu, however, three loyal Musketeers, Athos (Kiefer Sutherland), Porthos (Oliver Platt) and Aramis (Charlie Sheen) uncover his plan to take over the throne.
This tunic and hat are the most signature elements of Athos’ costume in the film, as he can be seen wearing both in a number of scenes. Both items were gifted from Kiefer Sutherland to his assistant, directly following the films wrap. The tunic is made from navy blue felt that hangs over the shoulders and extends down to approximately thigh height, measuring 34” (86.5 cm) from top to bottom. This tunic features a beautiful silver trim with a light floral print, extending the entire length of the tunic at approximately 2” (5 cm) in width. The Musketeer insignia can be found stitched on the front, the back, and to each shoulder of the tunic. The insignia depicts a variation of the fleur de lis symbol. Also featured on the inside of the tunic is a tag, that reads: "Kiefer."
Athos' hat is made from a firm, beige felt. The cap of the hat measures approximately 8” (20 cm) in diameter and is approximately 5” (12.5 cm) deep. Around the bottom of the inside of the cap, where the hat would rest on Athos’ head, is brown leather lining. The brim of the hat is approximately 18” (45.75 cm) in diameter and curves upward on the left side of the hat. Where the brim of the hat meets the cap of the hat, a decorative band of cloth has been sewn around the circumference of the cap. On the left side of the hat, are two feathers that have been tied into this decorative band. The first of these feathers is a large, whitish-gray feather, which billows out into a wide array of frills. The second feather is a pattern of alternating black and gold stripes. This feather is far finer and more compact, as it extends to a point approximately 10” (25.5 cm) beyond the back of the hat.
Also included with this costume is photo album created by Kiefer Sutherland's assistant during the production. These photos offer a rare behind-the-scenes look taken during the production of the films climactic final battle. The 3.5" x 5" (9cm x 13cm) photos show Kiefer Sutherland onset with captions below each picture. The album measures approximately 14" x 12.5" x 1" (36cm x 32cm x 3cm) and is in good condition.
This costume features minor wear from production use and age, including some slight fading in the color, however it remains in excellent, production-used condition.
